WEEK 1

BRIEF, TARGET MARKET, RESEARCH ISSUES

16th – 22th April 2020

!

In the first week of having Community Service Initiative module of the semester, Miss Norji and Mr Redwan gave us detail briefing via ZOOM Meeting, to explain about what is this module was about and what we will contribute to the projects. Well, Community Service Initiative was a module for us (as a student) to demonstrate collaborative work in a career that will make contributions to society in Malaysia. Throughout this module, we will learn how to analyse types of issues that are happening in this society today or during the past, and make a move to solve the real-life situation. The range of issues are included environmental, poverty, social discrimination, cyberbullying and more. Besides, there are other learning outcomes we will gain throughout this module such as to learn how to apply information management skills to strengthen our lifelong academic learning; to gain knowledge of service learning meanwhile foster a sense of care and concern to the people and situations; to enhance our creative, critical and reflective skills; to develop our personal and social responsibility while we exposed to community needs and experience caring for the public; and to develop our basic knowledge and skills in community service capability such as art of volunteerism.

Besides that, Ms Norji also explained that all of the assessment for this Community Service Initiative module will be fully online as the situation right now is a critical period since the Movement Control Order (MCO) lockdown is happening. All the assessment and announcement can be reach through different online platform like Telegram, ZOOM Meeting, Microsoft Teams, Taylor’s TIMEs, Padlet, and Google Classroom. I personally feel respect and admire to our module lecturer as they are being concern, open-minded, and flexible to create a journey for us to explore all these different types of creative online platforms. Different types of different online platforms have had gave us different types of using experience. I personally feel that sometimes these online platform are a bit too much and confusing, but it’s okay, I understand that lecturers sometimes afraid that we couldn’t access the MIB, files and announcements on Taylor’s TIMEs, as if we online have 1 online platform plus having technical issues at the same time. That’s why multiple online platforms are created.

Furthermore, while we had our first class online meeting with lecturers and classmates via ZOOM Meeting, we were told that our assessments are classified into 3 forms. From E-Journal Reflection Writing with 30% marks and 12 weeks of durations to do it; Proposal through Online Project Activities with 20% + 30% marks and a total of 11 weeks of duration to do; 20 minutes of Online Group Presentation with 20% marks at the last Week of the semester. I personally felt that we are very lucky that all of our assessments are through online as we just have to carry out the project proposal without doing a real-life event, due to the MCO lockdown period. However, all of our online assessment will be submitted through the online platforms as mentioned earlier.

Group work. For the assessment of this module, all students were separated into to a group of 4. In a special case for my group, we only have 3 members which is only Heidi Wong, Lee Ning and I, due to the odd numbers of students in this class. I personally feel lucky that I could work together with them as a team member for this project because as what I know them for more than 2 years, they are a type of productive, rational, fast and smart person when comes to doing work. So, I feel kind of exited to work with them and the same time can understand them, get to know about their style of working and learn from their strength and capability. Oh yeah, forget to mention, as we only have a total of 3 teammates (include myself) in this group, I’m wondering if it would be challenging for us to work on the same load of assessments like others which are having 4 in a group, because of the lack of man power. So, perhaps lecturers can understand us more and reduce the work load of the assessment? I don’t know hahaha. Because, no matter what, I’m actually fine with it, I can take this challenge as part of opportunity to test out our girl’s power of our group! Yeah~

The project of our assessment will be focusing on the Cyber Security in Malaysia. On 21th April 2020, Tuesday, my group (Group 12) had an online discussion meeting via ZOOM to discuss on what are we going to aim for the target market, project theme and look into the current issues that faced by the society in the past and right now. We have decided that we will be focusing on the Kids as the target project for the assessment.

The kids nowadays are growing up faster than before and we can actually help them to avoid pitfalls by keeping one step ahead pf exploring the Internet boom in this super-wired age. Besides, connecting with strangers through social media networks can sometimes be dangerous to them if they get in touch with wrong connections. Hence, the sufficient way to keep track is to make sure that we as adults, parents, teachers and others should familiar with our children’s social media connection. That’s the purpose of project theme that my group are looking forward to achieve. According to what we analyse, the issues that kids facing with dangerous social media connections are included Momo Challenge, Cyberbullying, Identity theft, Download Strange App, Clicked into Wired Links, Chat with Strangers and more. ‘“Momo challenge” is associated with the creepy cropped image of a sculpture of a woman with huge bulging eyes, ominous smile and Risoung-girl-like black hair, comes from Midori Hayashi, a Japanese doll artist. It was not used to associated with the game at first. However, hackers and scammers used this “Momo” as a viral challenge that asks people to add a contact in WhatsApp (messaging app), then they have to harm themselves or to commit suicide. It’s similar to “Blue Whale challenge,” a social media group that encourages people to kill themselves.’ (Andy Rovertzon, 2019). Therefore, throughout this cyberbullying, it had brought huge negative impact towards the target users who were mostly children under 15 years old. The impacts included undermining their individual confidence level, affecting daily-life performance, affecting attendance in school, causing childhood trauma, causing stress and harmful to health, causing depression and sense of loneliness, and will have suicidal thoughts.

In the end of this week, we are assigned to upload the list of selected team members, link of group Padlet and link of our individual blog website into Taylor’s TIMEs; also to upload the progress of our group’s research issues, project themes, and selected target market into Group’s Padlet for lecturers to look into our weekly progress, and to upload individual weekly reflection into our own online blog website.
